Improvisation is the core.
jazzSmells takes a musical ride transcending stylistic categories as Neobop, Fusion, Worldjazz, Avantgard or Traditional. The musicians shake the bounderies of ever-used, all so jazz-typical forms and avoid the perpetuating distinction of soloist and rhythm section. The music is unique, shaped by spontaneous communication combined with a courage to take risks and an element of surprise.
„The music of jazzSmells roots in tradition and is both idiosyncratic and exciting. The playing of the trio is very interactive. The warm, rich sound and the fine compositions of Klaus Fey are splendid, supplying a special sound to the band, David Jehn, masterful and fragile, is in some ways the hidden leader of the gang, and of course there´s Wolfgang Ekholt, showing all colours of drum playing from calm webworks to explosive powerhouse drumming. A trio worh listening, following its own path.“
„Respect, very good… everybody´s playing really very well.“
„Groovy – pacing – funky with a bunch of Soul. Sophisticated Jazz on the highest level.“
„The jazzSmells Concert in the Wilhelm 13 in Oldenburg was really great! Although not being a genuine fan of ensembles without harmony instrument, I was convinced by the unleashed playful lust and creativity. Listening was pure fun!“
