The Songs
All titles have been written for just this ensemble. Very often no classical songs – sometimes more fragments and key words, presented spontaneously and opening doors to new musical landscapes. The free and daring, sometimes even abstract, passages are appreciated by the audience acknowledging the music as an authentic entity. Debut CD „Dots and Lines“, released at Laika-Records.
Odd Minor
This title refers to the odd meter and the minor key. It starts with a torn unisono of bass and sax, a tricky drum improvisation on top. The main part composition has got a heavy, bluesy approach. Ast the end bass and sax evolve short solo-statements.
Ionian Ballad
Spreading a bright, peacefully meditative mood, reduction as a stylistic device, using just a few spare notes and melodies, this piece is drifting, arrives at no harbour. Not too easily to play…
NN33
There´s a solid rhythmical framework in the frontyard, being covered with blossoming exotic melodies. In this piece the improvisation is on no leash, every musician takes a grip on the introduced tonal material, citing it, changing it. The circle is closed again by the solid rhythmical framework.
Tango
A funny and happy approach, the Tango rhythm itself faces a strange alienation. A bass-solo is backed by a clarinet, picking single notes from a chord progression. Abrupt ending.
Giant steps for pedestrians
A humorous hint to Coltrane´s iconic superfast GIANT STEPS from 1959. The chord progression remains, but it is slowed down by African rhythm patterns and a new melody. A highly energetic piece featuring an intro and an interlude of the drums carried by heavy riffs of sax and bass.
Dots and Lines
A little motif of baroque reminiscence in the beginning, gaining melancholic expressivity, nearly painfully distorted. A bow to the bass and the drums used like timpanis emphasize the dark mood. Afterwards there´s a relaxed part featuring an extended bass-solo.
